Background and Objectives

This course responds to the urgent need for effective diabetes prevention and management in Cameroon and Africa at large, where many diabetes cases remain undiagnosed or poorly managed. As such, this Afro-Brit Certificate programme in Diabetes Education and Awareness seeks to:

  • Train diabetes educators in communication and nutrition.
  • Equip health workers with strategies for community awareness.
  • Enable customized patient education using scientific content and practical approaches.

 

Programme Structure

This certificate course will explore the Pathophysiology of Diabetes, Epidemiology, Diagnosis and Classifications, Macro and Microvascular Complications, Dietary Planning and Diabetes Menu, Communication and Counselling Skills, Behaviour and Lifestyle Interventions, Diabetes Care in Children and Elderly and Case-based Learning and Nutrition Assessments

 

Learning Outcomes

By end of the programme, learners will:

  • Understand diabetic pathology and complications
  • Educate and counsel patients across demographics
  • Engage communities through health promotion activities
  • Develop personalized diabetic nutrition plans

 

Eligibility

Successful applicants for this course will typically be graduates in Life Sciences, Food Technology, Pharmacy, or Nursing. Current Diploma holders in diabetes, nutrition, or public health will be considered. However, Advanced Level CGCE holders in the sciences who intend to progress to the Diploma and Advanced Diploma programmes offered by Afro-Brit Centre for International Development will be considered.

 

Duration and Cost

This Certificate programme in Diabetes Education and Awareness is designed for three (03) months and will cost 150,000FCFA. In addition, students will pay 10,000FCFA for registration. 

 

Career Prospects

Graduates from this course will be able to function as Diabetes educators in health institutions, Nutritionist in diabetes-specific programs, Field coordinator in NGO-led awareness campaigns, Community health extension officer, and Advisor in government NCD programs.
