This undergraduate is not only timely but relevant as it addresses global inequalities through interdisciplinary research, and teaching, in order to promote a socially just world in which all people, including future generations, can enjoy a decent life. This programme is led by a team of development professionals who have all undergone robust international development training across various world-class top universities in the UK.
BSc in International and Rural Development at Afro-Brit Centre for International Development focuses on the social, economic, and environmental challenges faced by the African continent, as well as Asia and the Pacific, and Latin America. However, the challenges facing peoples, businesses and governments especially in low- and middle-income countries cannot be understood without exploring connections with the high-income countries. Today’s challenges – climate change, inequality, and social justice – cut across global boundaries and require a global perspective. You will learn how to analyse these issues using different approaches, as the course emphasises insights from a range of interconnected disciplines, particularly sociology, geography, politics and economics. Our students will also learn about the social, economic and environmental challenges faced by the Global South and the major expectation is to see the students equipped with knowledge and skills that can help drive forward social justice for all.

The BSc in International and Rural Development at Afro-Brit Centre for International Development will run for 3 years for full-time and 4 years for part-time students.
Year 1
Students will learn about the world’s most pressing global development challenges, including poverty, climate change, public health-related issues and gender inequality. They will learn how insights from different disciplines can be combined to help us understand international and rural development challenges, and how understandings of development have evolved over time.
Year 2
In the second year, students will have the opportunity to specialise based on their interests, for example focusing on environmental, political or economic challenges. There will also be the opportunity to take courses from Afro-Brit’s development related programmes linked to peace and humanitarian action as well as and conflict studies, learning more about how communities and organisations respond to natural disasters and violent conflicts. If students prefer, they can keep their options open and continue without choosing a specialism.
Year 3
The third year will build on the interests that students have developed in their year two course work, choosing from a wide range of optional course units. They will also write a dissertation on a topic in international development, supervised by an individual lecturer who will meet with the student one-on-one over the course of the final semester. At Afro-Brit, all students will be subjected to present their research to a very experienced panel, and it is expected that every research work from the students will be aligning with our mandate towards catalysing development efforts locally and internationally.

This degree, and its placement provide an excellent starting point for a career in international development or wider opportunities. The combination of natural and social sciences, quantitative and qualitative analysis, and experience of challenges in international development is highly relevant to careers in business, NGOs, government departments, and research institutions. For those working in the international development sector it is typical to build up a portfolio of work experience and volunteering in Cameroon and Africa at large, in order to enhance your employability and career options. We therefore encourage students to engage with a range of opportunities at Afro-Brit, such as the Afro-Brit Employability Services, student volunteering and placements. You can also write your research dissertation based on a real world practical or policy issue.
