Background and Objectives
Obesity is a rising epidemic and a major contributor to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. To help address this growing public challenge, Afro-Brit has designed this certificate course to help learners acquire the necessary knowledge and skills that can provide the much needed solutions. This programme focuses on:
- Understanding causes and consequences of weight gain.
- Educating about diet, physical activity, and psychological factors.
- Applying behavioural therapy and alternative treatments.
- Designing sustainable and culturally sensitive weight management plans.
Programme Structure
Throughout the programme, learners will explore a diversity of modules including an introduction to Nutrition and Energy Balance, Understanding Obesity and Overweight, Genetic and Environmental Influences, Stress, Sleep and Exercise Impacts, Nutrition Therapy for Weight Management, Behavioural Interventions and Slimming Therapies, Pharmacotherapy and Surgical Solutions, Role of Yoga and Meditation and Case Studies in Obesity and Weight Control
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the programme, learners will be able to:
- Understand the biology and behavioural roots of obesity.
- Counsel individuals for weight loss using scientific guidelines.
- Apply strategies to manage stress-related eating and sedentary lifestyle.
- Plan balanced, goal-specific diet plans.
- Understand non-dietary treatments such as mindfulness and surgery.
Eligibility
To be eligible for this certificate course, applicants must hold CGCE A-Level in Sciences. Also, experience in health, wellness or physical fitness sectors considered for non-science applicants
Duration and Cost
This Certificate programme in Obesity and Weight Management is designed for three (03) months and will cost 150,000FCFA. In addition, students will pay 10,000FCFA for registration.
Career Prospects
Upon completion of this certificate course, graduates can work as Obesity/Weight Loss Consultants in clinics and gyms, Wellness Coaches and Lifestyle Counsellors, Bariatric dietitian assistants and Community Health Workers in obesity-related outreach
