Background and Objectives

With an increasing aging population globally and nationally, this programme addresses the unique and growing need for specialized nutrition support for older adults. As aging affects physiological functions and dietary requirements, improper nutrition can lead to malnutrition, chronic diseases, weakened immunity, and reduced quality of life. Afro-Brit Certificate programme in Geriatric Nutrition is thus designed to equip learners with knowledge to:

  • Understand the aging process and its impact on nutrient needs.
  • Develop effective dietary plans for common geriatric conditions.
  • Promote active aging and reduce risks associated with undernutrition, drug-nutrient interactions, and food safety concerns.

 

Programme Structure

Within the three months, learners will be exposed to the following core modules: Nutrition and Eating in Older Adults, Introduction to Geriatric Nutrition, the Impact of Nutrition on the Aging Process, Nutritional Assessment Tools for Seniors, Planning Geriatric Diets, Food Safety and Special Dietary Needs and Outreach to Health Institutions and Project Portfolio.

 

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  • Evaluate dietary habits and nutritional risks of older adults.
  • Create and modify meal plans for seniors with chronic conditions.
  • Use dietary guidelines like RDAs and the Eatwell Guide to design senior-friendly diets.
  • Conduct nutritional assessments and advocate for healthy aging.
  • Manage food-drug interactions and age-related appetite issues.

 

Eligibility

The entry level into this certificate course is CGCE Advanced Level in Sciences. Applicants with Arts/Social Science background with relevant experience in elderly or health care will be considered.

 

Duration and Cost

This Certificate programme in Geriatric Nutrition is designed for three (03) months and will cost 150,000FCFA. In addition, students will pay 10,000FCFA for registration. 

 

Career Prospects

Graduates from the Afro-Brit Certificate programme in Geriatric Nutrition will be equipped with the requisite knowledge and skills that will permit them to work in Elder care facilities, Hospitals and clinics, NGOs involved in nutrition programming, Community outreach and wellness programs and can also serve as Nutrition consultants focusing on elderly care.
