Afro-Brit Centre for International Development brings this programme at the reach of those aspiring to engage in humanitarian work. The programme will provide you an in depth understanding of the international humanitarian setting, development and policy. The students will gain skills in aid and crisis management for local, national and global challenges including conflict, displacement and climate change. The BSc in Global Humanitarian Studies will equip students with the knowledge and skills to navigate complex humanitarian crises. This multidisciplinary programme combines theory and practice, preparing students to assess threats and vulnerabilities, analyse risks and develop evidence-based responses to international crises and global challenges including disasters, climate change impacts, forced displacement and conflict.

The BSc in Global Humanitarian Studies at Afro-Brit Centre for International Development will run for 3 years for full time and 4years for part time students.
In this programme, you will study crises and challenges driven by natural hazards, climate change, forced displacement and systemic inequalities, with the opportunity to examine the intersection of humanitarianism and policy, technology, law, culture, health and economics. You will learn a range of skills, bringing together approaches from different disciplines, to better understand the international humanitarian system and build a multi-disciplinary approach with perspectives ranging from international development and human rights to international relations and community resilience building.
Year 1
In the first year, students will explore the global history of humanitarianism, understand the humanitarian crisis response mechanisms and critically engage with case studies and scenarios around climate and natural hazards. The students will be equipped with knowledge and skills in statistical and geospatial data analysis, explore key concepts and debates in humanitarian interventions. By the end of the first year, students will be exposed to core interdisciplinary skills for international development professionals and humanitarian actors. Optional modules will include technology for humanitarian action, introduction to global health and key concepts in social anthropology.
Year 2
In the second year, core modules like international legal frameworks for humanitarian action will be examined and how these frameworks are applicable to the local contexts. Students will also understand the concepts of humanitarian and aid economics, humanitarian logistics and supply chain management. The premise of humanitarian policy will be established while ensuring that students master the historical and contemporary perspectives to conflict and migration. Students will also explore the anthropological theory of the 21st century, humanitarian practice and data science and the development of early warning systems. As a part of the programme, students will engage in a field trip to experience first hand how humanitarian activities are carried out. In preparation for the final year of the programme, students will undertake core training on research methods for development.
Year 3
In year three, the main modules will focus on the strategies and mechanisms involved in evaluating humanitarian interventions as well as programme management for humanitarians. Other modules like water, security, crises and sustainable development, microeconomics for humanitarian contexts, critical approaches to humanitarian interventions, as well as violence, intersectionality and marginalization will be explored. An important optional course on global maternal and child health will be availed to the students. Greater time will be allocated towards an independent humanitarian research project, where students will be placed with organisations involved in humanitarian activities at local, national and international settings.
This programme was created to help professionalise the humanitarian sector. Teaching and module content is based on consultation with global and national employers, and the key skills you will acquire will prepare you for you future humanitarian career, whichever specialism you choose. Between the second and third years, we will use our extensive networks to help facilitate an optional four-week summer placement, in Cameroon or internationally, to help you connect your academic learning with skills in the humanitarian workplace. Afro-Brit will also hold an annual Careers Discovery Event to give you an insight into working in the sector and introduce you to some key employers. This is a great place to start looking for internship hosts too! After graduation, you can go on to work in industry or pursue further studies in risk, disaster reduction, humanitarian aid, and emergency response. Graduates from the programme will successfully secure internships and employment in NGOs involved in related humanitarian activities.
